NZ Post gears up for record-breaking Christmas

New Zealand Post is gearing up to process 41.5 million letters and parcels this December - 20% more parcels than last year.

After seeing the strong demand in online shopping, the state-owned enterprise has taken on an additional 600 staff, 200 vans, 13 trucks and is operating an additional 737 plane to meet the predicted increase in Christmas volumes.

NZ Post chief operating officer Mark Stewart said the company began seeing increased growth in early November.

Some of its busiest days of the year yet were reaching over 2.7 million items in the system, Stewart said.

“Being ready for Christmas has been a priority as we know how much it matters for people,” he said.

“We’ll be pulling out all the stops right up until the last delivery day which is the last Saturday [December 23] before Christmas.”

Stewart said NZ Post recommended customers to send their parcels within New Zealand by December 19 for Standard Post, ParcelPost and ParcelPost Tracked.

Items being sent by FastPost, Courier Parcel and Courier & Signature Parcel need to be sent by December 20.
