Overstayer faces deportation for groping girl

A 48-year-old man faces deportation to Samoa after serving his sentence for groping an 11-year-old girl.

The first strike warning was translated into Samoan for overstayer Anitelea Sofele Manava at Christchurch District Court, where he today admitted indecent assault.

Police prosecutor Bronwen Skea said Manava was arrested following the bizarre incident on February 12.

She said the victim was an home with her family when Manava knocked on the back door.

When the girl opened the door, he told her: "Pack your bags and let's go".

He told her he loved her and grabbed her by the front of her clothing, saying, "Let's go. I'll give you money".

Manava hugged the girl, then touched her breasts, genital area, and buttocks, on the outside of her clothing.

He told the girl's sister, who witnessed the incident: "Don't say anything".

The victim then managed to break free and alerted her brother, while Manava ran off. He was found the same evening.

Defence counsel Michael Knowles described it as "a minor case of its type" involving "a three or four seconds grope on the outside of the clothing".

Manava would be deported as soon as he had served the sentence, he said.

Judge Brian Callaghan remanded Manava in custody pending sentencing on May 23.
