Police name two crash victims

Police have named two of the three people who were killed on the country's roads over the weekend.

Epenesa Fiva, 23, died when he lost control of the car he was driving and smashed into an oncoming vehicle on State Highway 2 in northern Waikato.

The collision happened at Mangatawhiri, 11km northwest of Maramarua, about 6.30am yesterday.

The other driver was in a stable condition but suffered two broken legs and a broken arm.

Counties-Manukau police Constable Jessica Clarke said serious crash unit investigations found speed and wet weather to be factors in the collision.

Motorcyclist Kalman Douglas Thomson, 33, died after losing control on a bend on Middle Rd, south of Hastings, on Saturday afternoon.

The father of three was negotiating a sweeping bend when he came off the road, crashing into a fence.

He died at the scene. His female passenger, riding pillion, was in a stable condition with several injuries including a broken collarbone, Sergeant Clint Adamson, of Hastings police, said.

A 45-year-old Taranaki woman was found dead in her upturned car in the Mangatoki Stream between Kaponga and Eltham in Taranaki yesterday morning.

One of her family members found the crashed vehicle after the woman failed to return home on Saturday morning, Senior Constable Jono Erwood, of Stratford police, said.
