The husband of Silver Ferns netball playeer Irene van Dyk is facing charges after clearing gorse from the couple's Upper Hutt erosion-prone property.

Greater Wellington regional council laid three charges against Christie van Dyk and Earthmovers Wellington Ltd for Resource Management Act breaches, The Dominion Post reported today.

The council's environmental regulation manager Al Cross said the charges included disturbing soil on erosion-prone land, disturbing stream beds and diverting water from those streams.

Mr van Dyk declined to comment, other than to say he was not yet sure how he would plead.

A report to the council said clearing the gorse meant there was no vegetation holding the soil in place, making the land was prone to slips and putting the highway at risk.

The van Dyks were reported in November after bulldozers were seen being used on the 2.5 hectare State Highway 2 property in Kaitoke.

The pair was fined $750 for breaching an abatement, and ordered to do remedial work.
