A 32-year-old Tasman man who died after his car left the road and smashed into a tree yesterday has been named by police.
He was Hayden Craig Penman, of Murchison.
Mr Penman, who was the sole occupant, was driving south on State Highway 6 towards the Buller Gorge when his car failed to take a moderate bend and left the road, about 4km south of Murchison, about 8am.
He was not wearing a seat belt and no other vehicles were involved, Sergeant Mal Drummond of Richmond police said.
"There was nothing to indicate that there was a problem with the road or anything along those lines -- conditions were good at the time," he told NZPA.
It was too early to say whether speed or alcohol were factors.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
One other person was killed on the roads over the weekend.
Francis Joseph (Harry) O'Boyle, 70, of Darfield, died after crashing on the Hororata-Dunsandel Road, west of Christchurch, between 7.30pm and 8.30pm Friday.
He was taken to Christchurch Hospital but died from his injuries about 3am Saturday.
Senior Constable Rob Stuart of Leeston police said they wanted to hear from anyone who saw Mr O'Boyle's silver Ford Fairlane, registration FKP356, in the Dunsandel area around the time of the crash.
