Large groups of Gisborne secondary school students are being attracted to watch fights by a text message network, say police.
There were two such incidents on Friday. The brawls were obviously planned as some students filmed the fights on their cellphones, said Senior Sergeant Rodger Gray of Gisborne police.
No one had been badly hurt in the fights, where two fighters squared off in front of a large number of onlookers.
Police would not make any further comment until they had spoken to the schools concerned, Mr Gray said.
