Trials set for high-profile murder cases

Trial dates next year have been set for men charged in relation to two high-profile murder cases in Auckland.

John Ward Skinner, 37, and Iain Lindsay Clegg, 35, were handed a trial date of May 17 next year at a callover in the High Court in Auckland today. They are charged with murdering undercover policeman Don Wilkinson.

The charges were laid following the death of Mr Wilkinson during an attempt to put a tracking device on a car as part of a night-time police surveillance campaign in Mangere on September 11 last year.

Their trial is expected to take three weeks.

A four-week trial starting on April 12 next year was set down today for Joseph Reekers, 51, who is charged with murdering Marie Jamieson eight years ago.

Ms Jamieson, a 23-year-old hairdresser, went missing on February 9, 2001. Her naked body was found dumped behind a factory in Ranui, west Auckland, 10 days later.

Reekers was arrested last year after a DNA sample was taken from him.
