Two Auckland ASB banks robbed in less than a day

The aggravated robbery of an ASB bank in Auckland this morning was the second in the city in less than 24 hours.

Police said a young man, who claimed he had a firearm, robbed the ASB Bank on the second floor of the St Lukes Shopping Centre about 9am today.

Yesterday about 4.20pm a heavily disguised man robbed Blockhouse Bay branch of ASB Bank at gunpoint before escaping with a large amount of cash, police said.

Detective Sergeant Jason McIntosh, Avondale CIB, said today's offender entered the ASB bank shortly after it opened and waited in line with other customers before approaching a teller.

"He has then informed the teller that he had a firearm and demanded cash," Mr McIntosh said.

"Cash amounting to $3300 has been handed over to the offender."

The man ran from the bank into the carpark, before heading east in the direction of Cornwallis Street and Warren Freer Park.

Mr McIntosh said surveillance footage obtained from the bank showed the man was a male Caucasian in his late teens or early 20s, of slim build with a whisper of a moustache and minor facial hair.

Mr McIntosh said police want to hear from anyone who saw the incident or had knowledge of the offender.

In yesterday's robbery the offender threatened tellers with a firearm before leaving with the money, getting into a stolen white 1999 Mitsubishi Legnum station wagon parked at the bank entrance, police said.

The car, registration number ETJ531, was facing the wrong way. The driver sped out of the car park heading along Blockhouse Bay Road.
