Two people have died in a crash on State Highway 2 at Nukuhou in the Whakatane district this morning.
It's believed the crash, involving two cars, may have been a head-on about 6.40am.
Senior Sergeant Danny Meade said officers were at the scene working out traffic diversions around the area and little was known about what caused the collission.
He said ambulance were treating other passengers at the scene.
The ages of the deceased pair are unknown.
