Warrants issued for men in forged banknotes case

Arrest warrants have been issued for three men who failed to appear at Wellington District Court today in relation to forged banknotes.

Brian Charles Henare, 21, Christopher Isitol Uritua, 26, and Whetu Williams, 18, unemployed, are accused of forging $100 and $50 banknotes after a police search of their room at the Duxton Hotel, Wellington, allegedly revealed about 50 counterfeit bills.

Police allege most of the banknotes were concealed within a small safe inside a book found in the hotel room.

Another banknote was allegedly found in the jacket pocket of one of the men.

Police said it was obvious that note was forged.

Forging banknotes carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison
