Police collect cannabis during recent raids in the central North Island.

The past year's cannabis recovery operations in the region have Central Districts police believing they are winning the war on cannabis.

More than 450 charges had been laid against 248 people, and more than 9000 cannabis plants recovered, police spokesman David Kirk said yesterday.

He estimated the numbers translated into a saving of more than $25 million in social harm costs - the estimated financial cost of the cannabis trade on health, education, employment, and the benefits system.

Police recovered cannabis in Taranaki, Ruapehu, Whanganui and Manawatu, with the biggest seizure being 320 plants from a plot in Taranaki.
