Weekend toll: one road death, one killed on railway line

A Waikato woman was the sole person killed on the country's roads during the weekend.

Waikato police said excessive speed appeared to have been a factor in a crash which killed 21-year-old Deserae Frances Samson yesterday.

She died after failing to take a corner near Matamata, east of Hamilton, about 4.30am.

The car rolled into a culvert, collided with a power pole, briefly knocking out power to several hundred homes, then came to rest upside down on railway tracks.

A child died on Saturday from injuries sustained in a crash which claimed the lives of his mother and brother in Hastings on Thursday, but the death did not add to the weekend toll.
