A 46-year-old Auckland woman is critically ill after being badly beaten by an intruder in her Mt Roskill home.
The woman was found last night in her bedroom by her teenage daughter after her husband, on a business trip to China, failed to contact her by telephone yesterday, police said.
She had been beaten unconscious and was taken to Auckland Hospital where she was put in intensive care.
The woman was in a critical but stable condition, police said.
Her Whitmore Rd house was cordoned off today while being examined by police and forensic experts.
Police spokeswoman, Noreen Hegarty, said the 19-year-old daughter was traumatised after finding her badly hurt mother.
"No matter how many times you get faced with these sorts of things they are always difficult and one wonders at the thinking of people who inflict these sorts of things on others," she said.
Ms Hegarty said it was too soon to say if anything was missing from the house or what the motive was behind the attack.
Anyone with information about suspicious behaviour in the Whitmore Rd area between mid afternoon on Sunday and 8pm last night, should call police.
