City gardeners making up for lost time

Mauro Pezzuto, from City Care, cuts the grass in Queens Gardens, in Dunedin, on Thursday, surrounded by large piles of fallen leaves.     Dunedin City Council parks and cemetery manager Scott MacLean said many parks, gardens and sports fields could not be maintained during Alert Level 4 lockdown.

Growth in parks usually slowed down in Dunedin at this time of year and normal scheduled maintenance, such as turf mowing and gardening, often dropped to twice a month, he said.

But after four weeks of lockdown and no maintenance done, the council would work with its contractors to increase maintenance to once a week, where required.

‘‘The increased frequency of maintenance is permitted under Alert Level 3and we expect that all of our sites will be up to full specification within several weeks.’’
