National MP John Hayes has joined a list of colleagues going under the knife to lose weight.

The Dominion Post reported that the Wairarapa MP lost 25kg over 14 weeks since having gastric bypass surgery at Labour weekend and now weighed 125kg and no longer suffered from type-2 diabetes.

Other MPs who have had the stomach shrinking operation include Education Minister Anne Tolley, Maori Party co-leader and Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia, National Party MP Chester Borrows and Maori Party MP Rahui Katene.

The operation costs about $30,000.
