Key slides in eyes of voters

One in four National voters hold a worse opinion of Prime Minister John Key than they did a year ago, while almost half of all voters feel negatively towards him, the latest political poll has found.

However, 63 per cent still feels he has a clear vision and is a strong leader.

A Fairfax poll of 1000 voters today revealed there was a growing divide between voters' opinions towards Mr Key.

According to the latest results, National still had enough support for a third term, with 44.9 per cent of the votes, while Labour held onto 32.6 per cent.

But when voters were asked to describe the leader in as few words as possible the results varied greatly.

Many voters regarded Mr Key a straight-shooter and a good or excellent leader, but many also thought he was arrogant and out of touch.

The poll, conducted by Ipsos, found one in four National voters held a worse opinion of him than a year ago, while 45.3 of all voters held a worse opinion of him now than this time last year.

This compared with 14.2 per cent of voters who viewed him more positively than a year ago.

The poll also found it was woman who were quickest to fall out of love with Key.

Before the last election about 50 per cent of woman supported National, but that had dropped back to 39 per cent in the latest poll.
