Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta has had a baby girl.

The 42-year-old, who represents Hauraki-Waikato, has given birth to Niua-Cybele Mahuta by Caesarean section.

Ms Mahuta, who is married to William Ormsby, said she has been able to juggle motherhood with her demanding career as an MP and aimed to return to Parliament early next year.

The MP, who was education spokeswoman this year, took her newborn son Waiwaia Nukutawhiti Mahuta to Parliament in 2009.

In 2008 her first son Ormsby was born prematurely, and lived for just an hour.

She said it was very traumatic and a tragedy for her family and had thrown herself into the election campaign to cope.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
