Dean Jones caught out by not playing straight

Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones has been caught out - the mother of his love child has exposed his extramarital affair.

Jones today admitted he fathered a son with his long-term mistress, leaving the 52-test batsman to try and salvage his marriage.

The 49-year-old had a long-term affair with 35-year-old Sydney flight attendant Kerri-Anne Hamilton.

She gave birth to their son, Koby, last August.

Jones has been married to his wife, Jane, for 24 years. They have two daughters, Phoebe, 19, and 14-year-old Isabella.

In 2007, while the affair was continuing, he accepted the accolade of Father of the Year in his home state of Victoria.

Jones was forced to acknowledge the affair, which ended last year, after he learned Ms Hamilton had given an interview to a television network.

Her revelations were due to be aired on Channel Nine's A Current Affair tomorrow.

"I can confirm that I am the retired cricketer referred to in the A Current Affair preview last night (Friday)," Jones said in a statement to Australian media.

"Following an on-and-off relationship with a women (sic), a child was conceived and subsequently delivered."

Once a paternity test confirmed he was the father, Jones said he agreed to pay child support.

"My immediate aim is to seek the forgiveness and understanding of family. I am therefore asking that you respect our privacy," the statement concluded.

The affair began in the late 1990s after the pair met at a golf day, where Hamilton was working as a promotions model.

The relationship apparently soured last year when Ms Hamilton, then six months pregnant, asked Jones for child support payments.

Jones, an elegant right-handed stroke-maker, played 52 tests and 164 one-day internationals during a career that spanned 1984-1994.

He turned to cricket commentary but was dumped from the Dubai-based production company Ten Sports in 2006 when, thinking he was off air, said "the terrorist has got another wicket" after South Africa's Hashim Amla, a devout Muslim, caught a Sri Lankan batsman during a match in Colombo.
