A large earthquake has struck Taiwan, rattling buildings in the capital of Taipei.
The US Geological Survey says the 6.4-magnitude quake was centered off the eastern coast of Taiwan, about 25km from Hua-lien. It struck at a depth of 45km.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not immediately issue any warning.
TV reports say subways in the capital of Taipei and the island's high speed railroad are operating. Taiwan television did not report any immediate casualties.
There was some damage to property in a community near the quake's epicenter.
Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage.
