British beer drinkers found a measure of good news on Tuesday amid a flood of economic downers: the fabled pint won't have to be renamed.
After a long debate over whether the European Union would force pubs to serve beer by the half-litre, the European Parliament decided on Tuesday to let Britain retain the pint, the mile and other imperial measurements.
The bill scraps a 2009 deadline to end the use of imperial measurements alongside metric units.
Minister for Europe Caroline Flint said the agreement will save British companies additional labeling costs during troubled economic times.
"It's a victory for common sense," she said.
"It shows that the EU is listening to the concerns of businesses and consumers and is not intent on imposing a 'one-size fits all' regime where unnecessary."
