Queen's hat resembles EU flag

The Queen's choice of hat has raised eyebrows as she opened Parliament, with many on social media likening it to the EU flag.

At the top of the agenda was Britain leaving the European Union, and as the monarch proposed new laws to prepare for this, some social users couldn't help noticing her choice of headwear, the BBC reports.

As she continued to announce the legislative programme for the next two years #QueensSpeech began trending on Twitter with more than 80,000 tweets.

Some used the hashtag to compare the Queen's floral blue hat to the EU flag.

One Twitter user posted: "Nice to see queenie dressed as the EU flag."

It is the first time since 1974 that the State Opening of Parliament has been a less formal affair due to the snap election.

Usually the reigning monarch would arrive in a horse drawn carriage, but this time the Queen arrived in a car and wore a dress instead of her crown and ceremonial robes.
