A fire engine from St Kilda Station responds to a fire in a classroom at Queen's High School in Dunedin yesterday.

Principal Di Carter said the ``suspicious fire'' started in a plastic bin used for paper recycling.

The blaze, which sparked the evacuation of all those at the school yesterday, is being investigated by police. A fire investigator examined the classroom yesterday.

A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters from St Kilda and Lookout Point stations were called to the school before 2pm.

The fire caused smoke damage to a classroom, which was usually used to teach year 10 pupils. However, the pupils were at a school camp so the classroom was not needed for the rest of the year.

No-one had been identified as having started the fire, she said.

There were no injuries and the school resumed as normal following the 10-minute evacuation, she said.
