The cost of strengthening the Tapanui Service Centre will be "significant'', according to a new report.

Engineering consultancy group Beca completed a detailed seismic assessment report on several buildings in the Clutha district last year.

That report gave the Tapanui Service Centre a new building standard (NBS) rating of 16%.

However, Beca has since done a reassessment and a new report presented to the West Otago Community Board states the building now has a 10% NBS rating.

A building assessed at less than 34% NBS is categorised as earthquake-prone, while those assessed at greater than 34% NBS but less than 67% NBS are categorised as earthquake-risk buildings.

Under the Building Earthquake-Prone Buildings Amendment Act the service centre is required to be strengthened within 25 years because it is in a medium seismic risk zone.

Engineers found the wall near the entrance of the service centre had to be removed and replaced with reinforced masonry block and the entire ceiling needed replacing.

Due to the scale of the work, it was likely the building's fire and accessibility would also need to be upgraded.

It was estimated the strengthening work would cost $161,000 plus GST.

The service centre remains open in the meantime.

The community board also sought reports on the West Otago Community Centre at Tapanui, the Heriot Community Centre, Dunrobin Hall, Crookston Hall and Waikoikoi Hall.

A Clutha District Council spokeswoman said the reports would be discussed at a service delivery committee meeting in Balclutha next week.
