Golf: Otago women's heavy loss yields Salisbury Cup to Southland

The resurgence of Otago women's golf received a severe setback when the team lost the Salisbury Cup to Southland over two rounds in Gore on Sunday.

It was not the loss that was significant but the 15 to 1 margin. Southland won all of the eight reverse singles in the morning round, with the top two players, Robyn Pullar and Angela Gerken, in top form.

Seven of the matches went Southland's way by the 14th green, which gave Otago only a slim hope of retaining the cup.

Laura Hoskin, the Otago No 3, lost to Jody Drysdale on the 17th green in the morning round, but in the afternoon rallied to prevent a Southland clean-sweep.

She was in good touch in the afternoon, requiring only 15 holes to beat Jenna Gainford 4 and 3 for Otago's solitary win.

Thomas Facer (Otago) was the star of the Otago age group championships, scoring 71 and 70 to win the Ken Reddington Trophy and the under-19 section at Taieri yesterday.

He finished five shots ahead of his nearest rival, JamieAnstiss, from the Queenstown Club.

Daniel Barnett (Chisholm Park) scored 77 and 76 to take under-23 honours, while Josh Kahukura (Omakau) scored 73 and 78 for the under-16 title.

The match of the day was in the under-14 grade. Inia Logan (Cromwell) scored 80 and 76 to win by a single stroke from Blake Buttar-Scurr (Otago) who followed his morning 83 with a two-over-par 74 in the afternoon.
