Singer Tiki Taane is to plead not guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour.

The 34-year-old was arrested after allegedly singing the protest rap song "**** the police" at a Tauranga club while officers carried out a routine inspection at the weekend.

Taane was due to appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow but his attendance has been excused.

His lawyer, Bill Nabney, told The Waikato Times he would enter a not guilty plea on the grounds Taane was not acting in a disorderly way and exercising his freedom of speech.

He expected the case to be remanded to a case review date.

Taane, a former member of New Zealand band Salmonella Dub, is best known for his No 1 solo hit Always On My Mind.
