PSA organiser criticises consultation

Calling for individual staff responses to a document promoting a new vision for Dunedin Hospital services has been described as a "sham consultation" by Dunedin Public Service Association organiser Julie Morton.

She is critical of the lack of involvement of unions in preparing the report from the Putting the Patient First governance group, publicised last week.

The report, which painted a picture of unco-ordinated, cash-strapped services, often in sub-standard facilities, is described as a strategic plan for improving the patient journey through Dunedin Hospital services, she said.

This lack of involvement meant the report affected staff morale, she said.

Asking staff for feedback was not true consultation because it was unco-ordinated and left it to individuals in their "own head space" to think about what the possibilities for change might be. She called for a collective and constructive approach to possible change.
