Bayfield appoints principal

Bayfield High School has appointed its first female principal in the school's 50-year history.

Board of trustees chairman Jeff Clamp announced yesterday Judith Forbes had been appointed principal.

"Judith is currently the deputy principal at Wanganui High School, and will bring to Bayfield a passion for providing excellent teaching, inspiring leadership, caring guidance and myriad opportunities to develop the very best young adults at Bayfield."

Mr Clamp said Mrs Forbes studied at the University of Otago and the Dunedin College of Education, and began her teaching career at The Taieri High School (now Taieri College).

"Judith will become only the fourth principal of Bayfield, and the first female principal in its 50-year history."

Earlier this year, Mr Clamp paid tribute to the school's present principal Denis Slowley, who resigned in April.

"Denis will leave with our sincere gratitude, and an excellent record of achievements, after almost 12 years of excellent service to both the school and the Dunedin education community."

Mr Slowley resigned after reaching a stage in his life where he was feeling increasingly compelled to try something different.

The 63-year-old said he wanted to dedicate more time to family, finish a doctorate on school leadership at the University of Otago, and indulge his passion for painting.

Mrs Forbes will take over the principal's position in Term 1 next year.
