Woman dies after fall from cliff

A woman who fell from a Christchurch clifftop on Saturday has died from her injuries.

Christchurch Police said today the 20-year-old woman, from Sumner, died at the city's hospital at around 1pm on Sunday, after falling from a cliff at Clifton near her home on Saturday.

Police duty inspector, Inspector Peter Hegarty, says the death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police were called to a location near Kinsey Terrace, Clifton just before 1.00pm on Saturday, after having been contacted by the woman's employer and by passers-by who saw the woman near a cliff edge.

Inspector Hegarty says police staff spoke with the woman for over an hour before she fell, soon after 2.00pm.

She suffered serious injuries in the fall and was taken by ambulance to hospital where she subsequently died from her injuries.

Insp Hegarty said: "Initial indications are that the deceased has fallen accidentally, but it will be for the Coroner to determine the cause of death.''
