Critter hunters turn out in force

Hunters gathered in Owaka yesterday to present their bounty at the Catlins Critter Hunt.

In its sixth year, the annual hunt raises money for Catlins Search and Rescue.

Co-organiser Ashley Mason said entries, at 43, were up on previous years.

There were three sections - adults (20 teams), intermediate (eight), and junior (15).

Adult hunters had to present five compulsory ''bounty'' - deer, pig, possum, rabbit, and eel - secured by participants during the weekend. Five more were drawn out at registration on Thursday - goat, stoat, shark, groper, and crayfish.

Juniors were asked to collect creatures including a moth, yabby, mouse, spider and crab. A weigh-in and prizegiving was held at the Owaka Rugby Grounds yesterday afternoon.

Winners of the adult section - Cameron Clark and his team - were awarded $400 and gave the prizemoney to Catlins Search and Rescue.

Intermediate team Bush Buster (Hadley Clark, Seth Moir and Connor Roughan) won the Deane Shute Memorial Trophy.

Mr Mason said the event was about having a ''bit of fun'' while raising money for Catlins Search and Rescue.
