Clutha District’s commitment to lifelong learning and improvement was celebrated on November 26, as 42 local trainees from 23 businesses were recognised at the Clutha District Training and Development Awards.

More than 180 people attended to acknowledge the achievements of employees who undertook formal training over the past year across a range of industries.

In her first formal appearance as deputy mayor, Michele Kennedy presented certificates to trainees, praising the commitment of employers in supporting staff development and the diligence of trainees in balancing study with professional and family responsibilities.

Guest speaker Marcus Akuhata-Brown inspired the audience with stories drawn from his experience in education, leadership and community work, encouraging trainees to see qualifications as a springboard to further growth.

The annual event was organised by Clutha Development to promote ongoing training for the district’s economic resilience and future workforce.

"These awards highlight the real people behind the statistics — local workers stepping up to learn new skills and local businesses investing in their teams," Clutha Development chief executive Linda Moore said.

"Training is good not just for individuals; it strengthens our businesses and our communities right across the district."

This year’s trainees represented a cross-section of the local economy including manufacturing, retail, hospitality, trades and professional services.

Many gained national qualifications or significant industry credentials to support career progression and improved capability.

"The strong turnout ... shows how much our district values people who are willing to learn and grow," Mrs Moore said.

"We are proud to celebrate their efforts and the employers who support them."

The Training and Development Awards are part of Clutha Development’s wider focus on workforce development, supporting local people and businesses to gain the skills they need for a changing economy.
