Unveiled as the new Highlanders captain on Wednesday, Harmon was yesterday whistled into the All Blacks to replace the skipper of the national side.
Sam Cane’s season is over after he fractured his cheekbone in the 38-31 win over Japan in Tokyo.
Harmon was heading for the short tour with the second-string XV, but will instead change course and link with the All Blacks as they prepare to play Wales on Sunday.
"With all the travel, I haven’t really been able to talk to him yet," All Blacks coach Ian Foster said yesterday.
"But he’s an experienced campaigner; he’s played so well for the Highlanders and I thought he played well in the July series as well for the Maori All Blacks against Ireland."
Foster has not revealed who will be All Blacks captain for the rest of the tour, though it is a fair bet it will be Sam Whitelock, and Ardie Savea will take the No 7 jersey.
Veteran hooker Dane Coles is also out of the tour with a minor calf injury.
He was due to start the Tokyo test before pulling up lame in the warm-ups.
Coles is to be replaced by Hurricanes team-mate Asafo Aumua.
Mark Telea remains with the All Blacks as Will Jordan (inner ear) is still unfit.
Patrick Tuipulotu and Damian McKenzie, who were brought into the squad as cover ahead of the test against Japan, will return to the All Blacks XV for its outing against Ireland A.
