CD Reviews: Joan As Police Woman

Joan Wasser's 2011 album The Deep Field, with its mix of contemporary soul and brooding electronica, was one of that year's best.

Fourth album The Classic touches down on similar territory only occasionally, with Wasser setting out to make a lighter, more accessible work that reflects her brighter state of being.

In doing so, she gets it right about half the time.

The remainder is a hotchpotch of odd style choices that include a doo-wop/beat-boxing clanger, an ordinary cod-reggae number and a couple of curiously narcissistic pop tunes that are well short of her best.

  • Joan As Police Woman. The Classic. Play It Again Sam
  • Three stars out of five.
