Events in question after low turnouts

An Alexandra event organiser is questioning the validity of events held in the town during the new year period after ''disappointing'' turnouts.

Despite good atmosphere at the Blues and Brews Craft Beer Festival on December 28 and the Picnic in the Park on New Year's Day, both held in Pioneer Park, the number of people attending did not meet expectations.

Organiser Martin McPherson said Promote Alexandra, which organised the events, would have a ''serious look'' at their viability and future.

''We had a break-even point of Blues and Brews around 650 punters, and Picnic in the Park was about 450, so both events have run at a loss, and the thing is, Promote Alexandra can't sustain that cost.''

The events were subsidised by a grant of $10,000 from the Vincent Community Board.

Fewer than 500 people attended the craft beer festival, and fewer than 300 adults, plus children, attended Picnic in the Park.

''For a long time this community has been asking for something to happen over that [holiday] period. Promote Alexandra went to a big effort to put those two very good events on and, quite frankly, the numbers were disappointing.''

People from Bannockburn and Roxburgh attended the beer festival, but Mr McPherson wanted to know where the Alexandra residents were.

He did not know why more people did not attend.

''I'm not sure why the punters did not punt ... the weather was perfect, the atmosphere was fantastic.''

He did not think new, stricter drink-driving laws played a part, as Pioneer Park was central in Alexandra.

While there was a lot happening in the region at this time of year, there were no other events scheduled on the same days.

Feedback had been ''overwhelmingly positive'' from those who attended, and vendors had been understanding and supportive.

''The question I put out there is, `What could we do better?'''
