Two people were transported to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after a car left the road and crashed down a bank into a stand of pine trees on Friday night.

A police spokeswoman said they received a report of the single-vehicle crash on Signal Hill Rd at 11.35pm.

The road was blocked while emergency services were at the scene.

Police were making inquiries into the circumstances of the crash, the spokeswoman said.

The car in question was seen resting at the bottom of a 100m embankment.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said they responded with an ambulance and two rapid response vehicles.

Three patients were assessed at the scene and two were transported to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition, the spokesman said.
