Feedback sought on paid Sunday parking

Paid parking on Sundays is coming to part of central Dunedin and the city council wants feedback on how big the zone should be.

It is proposed the area will include most of the Octagon, Moray Pl, Filleul St, part of London St and Great King St — ending at Frederick St.

Free, time-limited parking would remain in George St and Princes St.

The Dunedin City Council decided during its 2025-34 long-term plan process to bring in paid parking charges on Sundays in the central city.

The plan was adopted last month and the parking change will mean charges will be in place seven days a week from 9am to 6pm — except where signs indicate otherwise — in part of the central business district.

Public consultation has started about the size of the zone and it finishes on August 4.

Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said this would not be about whether the charges should be brought in.

"It’s important to note we won’t be revisiting whether to introduce Sunday parking charges — that decision has already been made by council, and aims to encourage parking turnover in the central city," she said.

Prices would be consistent with fees charged on other days of the week.

"It’s also important to stress free parking will remain available on Sundays outside the proposed zone," Ms Benson said.

"We would like to hear from nearby residents and visitors to the area, as well as businesses and organisations ... so let us know what you think and whether we’ve got it right."

Deputy mayor Cherry Lucas led the call to introduce parking charges on Sundays and she expected the change would be better for customers of businesses.

Retail staff in the central city would need to leave room outside shops for customer parking, she said.
