Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 8 between Tekapo and Lake Pukaki about 4.30pm yesterday, Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer said.
"Sadly, despite best efforts, one person died at the scene."
No other injuries were reported.
The road was closed for several hours while the Serious Crash Unit conducted an examination and reopened about 2am today.
