Pedestrian hit after driver ‘couldn’t stop in time’

A pedestrian hit by a truck while crossing the road in Dunedin yesterday afternoon was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Emergency services were called to the accident in Cumberland St near the Oval at 2.40pm.

‘‘Our ambulance staff treated one patient and transported them to Dunedin Public Hospital in a serious condition,’’ a Hato Hone St John spokesman said.

A witness told the ODT the truck was tooting its horn as the female pedestrian crossed the one-way road but the driver ‘‘couldn’t stop in time’’.

The truck appeared to ‘‘swipe’’ the pedestrian.

Police said traffic management was in place for a time. — Allied Media
