Smoke alarm prevents 'nasty incident'

A Dunedin resident woken by a smoke alarm as a wall in their house burned this morning says the device saved them from ''a pretty nasty incident''.

A Fire Service spokesperson said crews from Lookout Point and Roslyn were called to a house fire in Scotland Tce, Green Island about 3am.

On arrival they found the fire had burnt a hole in a wall and had spread inside the wall cavity.

The wall was near an open fire, which had burnt out.

It was unclear how the wall had caught fire.

A person sleeping inside the house was woken by a smoke alarm.

''A smoke alarm saved us from having a pretty nasty incident, which is a great result."
