After finishing work at 7am, Poeun Sem decided to go fishing, and shortly before noon he caught a 5.5kg salmon at Harbour Basin, Dunedin.
Using a sprat from the area as bait, it took 20 minutes to land the biggest fish he had ever caught.
"I was very happy," he said.
Mr Sem said he was likely to make a fish curry out of the salmon, but he may be eating alone.
"My family don't like fish."
The area is set to have its pontoon reinstated today after it was removed for repair in August, Dunedin City Council sports field and facilities officers Harold Driver said.
The pontoon, which will be installed by contractors from 6.30am today, has received new timber deckings, new metal framings and had its floats repaired.
