Liquor ban looks likely to be passed by council

Virtually all of the state highway passing through Balclutha will become a liquor-free zone from July 1, while problem areas in Milton will also come under a new liquor bylaw set to be adopted by the Clutha District Council on Thursday.

Despite opposition from a rural women's group and some young people, plans for the central alcohol bans look set to be pushed through with just one minor change - but the council is not ruling out future changes.

In a report to be debated at the full council meeting, planning and environment manager Murray Brass said a submission from the Clutha Veterinary Association to include its premises in the liquor zone should be supported as the business was the only landowner affected.

It was a different story with a push to widen the north Balclutha end from the Night 'N Day store to the Balclutha Lawn Cemetery.

Mr Brass said this change would affect landowners who had not been consulted.

"However, it is likely that there will be changes to the liquor ban areas over time and this extension could be added in the future if desired."

The same reasoning was used when discounting a call from some submitters to include the entire Balclutha township.
