Vigilance urged after spike in vehicle crime

Police are reminding the public to be extra vigilant following a recent spike in youth vehicle crime in the Clutha district.

Constable Briana Dent of the Balclutha police public safety team said local officers had received several reports of vehicles being stolen or broken into late at night.

"A small group of young people has been identified and will be held to account through the Youth Aid process," she said.

"This type of crime is typically opportunistic so it’s important vehicle owners take the necessary steps to ensure would-be car thieves cannot take advantage.

"That means always locking your vehicle and taking your keys with you. Don’t leave valuable items inside, or keep them out of sight, and, if possible, lock your vehicle in a garage or keep it out of street view."

She urged anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour around vehicles as it happened to call police on 111 and to pass on non-urgent information through 105 online or over the phone.
