The woman is practically a stranger to the district, having moved from Mosgiel with her husband and family some few weeks ago. She was of a quiet and uncommunicative disposition, although very fond of her little family. On Sunday evening she attended church, and was to all appearances in a normal condition mentally, but appeared rootless and a little worried. On the way home from church she chatted with an acquaintance, stating how pleased she was that the eldest of her little boys had started school and was doing so well at his lessons.
The police and Dr Evans were summoned immediately, and the bodies of the children were removed to the morgue. The mother was taken to police and removed to the Public Hospital at 3.30 pm, where she is undergoing medical treatment for injuries. Constable Excell, of the Roslyn Police Station, was the first officer to reach the house. He was followed very shortly afterwards by Sergeant W. Dunlop. Chief-detective Lewis, and Detectives Beer and Sneddon.
An inquest will be held to-day before Mr J.R. Bartholomew, District Coroner.
Road machine going smoothly
At the meeting of the St Kilda Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr R.W. Hall) reported on the demonstration made with a road roller, scarifier and planer which the council proposed to purchase. The demonstration had proved very satisfactory, and he felt sure that the machine would do all the work required in the borough. The question of roadmaking was now claiming the attention of all borough and county councils in New Zealand, as it was recognised that good roads were a necessity. The machine would be a valuable addition to the council’s plant. Cr Sims endorsed the Mayor’s remarks, remarking that the day of the pick and shovel was a thing of the past, and that the new machine was a most valuable acquisition. lt was unanimously agreed to purchase the machine. The borough foreman reported that during the next two weeks he intended to continue the tar work in Victoria Road, Tahuna Road, and Ing’s Avenue. He also reported that the new roller and scarifier had been in use for about a week, and had proved entirely satisfactory.
New country in Europe
It is no small thing to have get up in Europe a Power with territories greater than those of Italy and a population greater than that of Spain. This is what we and our Allies in the Great War did when we restored the independence of the Polish nation. It is obvious that a country of this size, with 27,000,000 inhabitants, is a factor in Europe which the manufacturer can no more ignore than the politician. One hundred and fifty years of Prussian rule have failed to crush this tenacious people. The Poles have not avenged themselves. There are German schools for Germans, who number 5 percent of the population. The Poles are confident in their ability to defend their home. — ODT, 10.11.1925
