Members of the Dunedin City Council cannot be accused of being slow to act on ratepayers' complaints.

Only a matter of hours after a caller complained on a radio talkback show about pigeons messing seats in the Octagon, Crs Jean McLean and Ian McMeeking were out in June 1985 tackling the problem.

Armed with buckets of water, scrubbing brushes and an umbrella for "protection," the two worked, much to the amusement of passers-by, many of whom contributed to a collection for Telethon.
