Another year for children's commissioner

Children's Commissioner John Angus is pleased his appointment has been extended for a further year.

The Lowburn man was appointed to the role in May, originally for six months, replacing Cindy Kiro.

The Minister for Social Development and Employment and Minister of Youth Affairs, Paula Bennett, said he would now serve until December next year.

He had "fitted in well" and extending the appointment would allow Dr Angus to complete work on the priorities that had been identified for his office, Ms Bennett said.

Dr Angus said it was an honour to work as Children's Commissioner.

"Being appointed through to December next year gives me the opportunity to work for priorities such as reducing the incidence of child abuse, looking at the use of child care for under-2-year-olds and improving the economic position of children in low income families," he said.

The role of the commissioner is to give a voice to children and young people aged up to 18, on policies, laws and matters that affect them, including their rights.

The Children's Commissioner works with community agencies, government departments and other organisations to raise awareness of children's interests generally.

Ms Bennett said while the Commissioner's Office was looking at ways it could work more closely with the Families Commission, there were no plans to change the office's status as a separate independent Crown entity.
