Two Americans cycling from near Christchurch to Arrowtown have not been troubled by magpies since adorning their helmets with cable ties.

It is the "swooping" season, when nesting magpies are likely to attack anyone cycling or walking.

Cable ties are said to provide some protection.

Linda Mower, was attacked near Geraldine before attaching the cable ties, but not since.

Layne Gneiting, who was attacked and bitten in Australia, has had a trouble-free run so far in New Zealand.

The pair are members of a group from Arizona on a leadership course.

The Central Otago District Council website has six suggestions for dealing with magpies: pay attention to nesting areas, never harass magpies, cover up, stay calm, make eye contact, get off your bike and be understanding and considerate.

The season ends in December.
