Chilly start in South after wintry blast

It's a cold start for many people in the South this morning after a wintry blast hammered the country yesterday.

MetService is showing sub-zero temperatures in parts of Otago and Southland, after a day which brought snow, hail and heavy rain to many places.

Around 7.30am Queenstown Airport was showing a temperature of -3degC, Omakau -2degC and Wanaka -1degC. The coldest place was Mid Dome in Southland, on a chilly -5degC.

Much of Otago experienced snow and bitterly cold winds yesterday as a front moved up the country

MetService said it would be a dry start for most in the South today, but more showers were forecast for the afternoon, which could bring snow down to 600m.

Conditions were expected to improve on Sunday, bringing mainly fine weather after possible frosts inland.
