Principal Andrew King said he heard about the school’s six new teaching spaces at the same time as the media.
Education Minister Erica Stanford said, in Queenstown on Friday, Dunstan High School’s new teaching spaces should be under construction in 12 months.
Mr King said the school had enough space for the present roll of about 600 but needed room to grow.
"We’re really excited. We’ve managing well at the moment but think we will need to expand in the future."
The school was negotiating with the Education Ministry about what the new spaces would be.
Mr King was unsure if they would be classrooms or specialist teaching spaces, which were prefabricated off-site.
It was likely the new spaces would be the standardised, repeatable buildings
"In a word, it’s fantastic. We’re really, really pleased. It’s exciting times to be moving forward."
Ms Stanford made the announcement at Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau in Hanleys Farm, which would have 12 new teaching spaces added at the same time as the Dunstan High School expansion.
In April she said the government had been accelerating and improving the cost-effectiveness of new builds using standard designs and off-site manufacturing.
