Cold start to the day

A hoar frost yesterday did not deter workers in Central Otago and the Upper Clutha making early morning starts on the job.

Temperatures in Vanuatu are in the mid to high 20s at this time of year, so -2degC in a vineyard near Wanaka yesterday required a fair amount of adjustment for Stuart Wilfred and his colleagues, although they appeared to be weathering it well.

The roll-out of the Waste Management New Zealand bins in the Queenstown Lakes District continued despite the cool weather, with the new bin service due to start on July 1.

The pond on the golf course at Lake Hawea was almost completely iced over yesterday morning, leaving ducks with little space in which to paddle.

Temperatures at Hawea Flat dropped to -4degC, producing ice crystals on fences and branches.

While low fog over Hawea Flat began to lift yesterday morning, in parts of the Upper Clutha it remained for much of the day.

In Alexandra, low-lying cloud and fog kept things chilly.

The town struggled to break 0degC, making it the coldest part of the country yesterday.

Hoar frosts threatened in other neighbouring rural areas in Central Otago, and residents expect winter to settle in over the next few days.
