Community co-ordinator sought to promote tourism and events

A new community, events and tourism co-ordinator role in Lawrence will hopefully boost tourism in the region and support community groups, those behind the idea say.

The part-time role was being established by the Tuapeka-Lawrence Community Company, which would fund the role for about the first four months, company chairwoman Mel Foster said.

It was hoped grants could then be secured to continue the role.

Mrs Foster said there had been much interest in the role already and it was hoped the inaugural co-ordinator would begin in March. It was anticipated they would work for about four months and then ``take a break'', and the role would continue from about September.

Mrs Foster said the role would promote and enhance the Lawrence region through event management, community co-ordination and tourism marketing.

This was important to expand tourism in Lawrence, and also to support existing groups, providing a central person to co-ordinate initiatives and help market events.

``There are some really enthusiastic volunteers out there trying to do what they can, but like any small rural town, quite often it comes down to a handful of people ... a lot of groups are struggling to keep volunteers or get new people,'' Mrs Foster said.

``We have some amazing groups and organisations here that are doing incredible things. We're just trying to support them and bring together some sort of cohesive programme.''

It was hoped community events such as barbecues could also be organised, another way to boost Lawrence's ``strong community spirit'', Mrs Foster said.

The inaugural role - which was for 10 hours a week - would possibly go to a local person, as they would ``know how to promote their own home town'', she said.

Applications for the role close on February 16.
