A digger, which the Otago Daily Times understands was working on the Clutha Gold Cycle trail, has fallen into the Clutha River, near Roxburgh.
It is understood the driver was uninjured in the incident, which left the machine sitting in about 10m of water.
Otago Regional Council environmental services manager Martin King said the council would normally be concerned about fuel from the digger polluting the river but he understood it was not an issue in this case.
